Adult Formation

Adult Christian Formation (ACF) provides opportunities for prayer, study, worship, and fellowship that support and assist us on our daily Christian journeys. Discerning and exercising our God-given gifts as forming Christians may involve participation in some of the activities described below or development of new ACF ministries. Through prayerful attention to the unceasing process of ACF, we open our whole selves to listen to God's call and respond in love to serve Christ Church, Rockville, and the world.

The rich Episcopal tradition in ACF focuses on both individual and community disciplines that deepen our relationship to God. Contemplative practices include quiet days, retreats, and labyrinth walks. Studies have explored scripture, Benedictine spirituality (http://www.benedictfriend.org/
), and theological writings. Since you are reading this web page, we also identify web sites of interest on your ACF journey, such as the opportunity to join Christians around the world in praying the Daily Office, complete with resplendent music, the lessons of the day, and petitions and intercessions.

Adult Forums are scheduled on Sunday mornings from 10:15 to 11:00 am in the Murdock Room from September through May.  The Forums provide a weekly opportunity for fellowship and learning presented by both laypeople and the clergy.  Share your special areas of interest and expertise through facilitating an Adult Forum session or series.

Book Talk meets the second Monday in January, March, May, July, September, and November at 7:30 pm in the Parish House for informal discussion of religious literature and poetry.  The people who attend this  reading and discussion group select the books to be read.

Bible Studies -  Wednesday Morning Bible Study meets from 11:00 am to 12:15 pm and is a clergy-led Bible study that works through entire books of the Bible in a leisurely fashion, providing time for group discussion and personal reflection.

Parenting on a prayer - Sundays at 10:15 a.m. during the Christian Formation (Sunday School) hour in the Parish House Living Room (the white Victorian house next to the church where the parish offices are located).

Stephanie Cromwell will facilitate this forum designed for parents of young children who are interested in being more intentional about, and sharing with other parents, the ways in which our Christian values and commitments inform how we raise our children.  The morning will include refreshments, some reflections on the morning’s Scripture lessons and sermon, and an open discussion about how parents can support one another in the challenges of nurturing small children.  (While initial conversation will focus on families with toddlers and young elementary school children, please know that all are welcome, as we all have a stake in raising the little ones of Christ Church).

This May series is designed as a pilot program, and we are hopeful that a Parenting Forum will become a regular part of our Formation offerings on Sunday mornings in the fall.

Wednesday Evenings advent class
Wednesday Evenings at 7:30 pm, November 28 - December 19 in the Parish HOuse
